Well organized and appropriately paced, dance instructor Cal Pozo’s Salsa Merengue includes instructions and demonstrations for this classic Cuban dance. Using his standard teaching method, Pozo starts with an explanation and history of the dance and includes animated footprints stepping out the moves, the perspectives (front and back) of each partner, and finally, a full-out demonstration. He begins with the fundamentals of the “Cuban motion,” as he calls it, which is “all … More >>

I sorta bought this one by accident. I don’t even like Latin music (though I dig Latin ladies), and would not be able to get into the groove of things. I guess for others, this tape would be okay, but for me, nah, not my thing…

As far as DVDs go, this one is rather simplistic and not very well made. The instructions are very clear and easy to learn but it is for the absolute beginner. No fancy stuff here.
Overall, a good intro to Salsa dancing.

I bought this video and because I opened it I could not return it. The salsa lessons were too short and looked like ballroom dancing. I did not learn anything useful.

This video is really informative. It is for the basic learner who has a concept of the up and back steps, and nothing more. Really good for a first timer or beginner-level dancer.

I have no idea what Cal Pozo is trying to teach, but it’s not Cuban salsa. I live in Miami, and I’ve taken salsa lessons from two instructors, and the dance Cal Pozo does has absolutely nothing in common with the dance I’ve been taught. For example, the basic step in Cuban salsa is from side to side; you pick up your left foot, step to the left, bring your right foot to the left, put it down briefly beside the left foot, and then you step to the right with your right foot and bring your left foot over to the right. Cal Pozo does some bizarre thing that takes four steps to each side.
Pozo teaches none of the “turns” that make up real salsa. If you do the real thing, you learn turns called “Exhibela,” “Dile que no,” “Sombrero,” and so on. Pozo doesn’t do ANY of these. If you study his tape and then go to a salsa club, you’ll look like [funny].
